Clémence
Poésy is the new face of the GStar RAW
campaign, taking over from fellow actress Gemma Arterton. But just what is it
about this French beauty that has captured the attentions of the Dutch denim
label?
G-Star is
known across the fashion world for its raw denim designs and uncompromising sense
of identity. The brand is constantly on the lookout for strong female role
models to break through style barriers and breathe life into their garments. This
strong signature style is the perfect match for Clémence, who has assured the
glossy magazines that she would never hire a stylist. ‘Clémence has brought
this in-control, confident sort of toughness and elegance together,’ says
Shubhankar Ray, G-Star Raw’s global brand director.

With roles
in Harry Potter and Gossip Girl under her belt, Clémence has quickly matured
into one of the hottest young actresses around. Her quintessentially French
style and beauty landed her the lead role in the BBC’s long-awaited adaptation
of Birdsong. Sebastian Faulks’s best-selling novel blends the horror of the WWI
trenches with the sweet romance of a warn-torn love affair. Clémence’s
Gallic charms also made her the perfect muse for both Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel
and Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga – projects which helped to shape her own
understanding of fashion.
In an interview with The Telegraph, the young star revealed:
‘You need
to be in a mindset that allows you to give something, otherwise it’s really
boring. It just becomes about being a clothes hanger, a living puppet. I knew
fashion was going to be part of my job, so I thought I might as well have fun
with it. I didn’t want people to decide what I was going to wear and what I was
going to look like and how I should behave.’ This
independent spirit brought Clémence to the attention of G-Star, who drafted in
fellow French actor Vincent Gallo for a Lisbon-based photo shoot. World-renowned photographer and filmmaker
Anton Corbijn captured the raw black and white look for spring/summer 2012
campaign, which Clémence believes is ‘very simple and kind of rock 'n' roll.’
This
relaxed style suits Clémence down to the ground, as she prefers classic denim
to red-carpet gowns. ‘I dress like a boy,’ she told Vogue Australia. ‘I just
wear jeans, big motorcycle boots and T-shirts that are way too big for me. I
like anything that has lived a little bit, that has traces of life on it.’
